Interview with Ashley Fontainne

Hi Ashley

Welcome to Comet Babe’s Books.

Can you please tell us about Empty Shell?
Empty Shell is a standalone, full length novel of approximately 117,000 words. It explores what true love really is and how we never really know the hearts and minds of those we call family, friends and lovers. It also delves into the reckless choice of personal vengeance and how, even when technology and science point to one conclusion, it isn’t always the truth. The story is told from the perspective of Melody Dickinson as she struggles to come to terms with her new life after her old one is stripped away. It also explores faith, loyalty and strength during times of crisis, all tied together with an explosive mystery, set in central Arkansas.

Empty Shell has a wonderful cover can you tell us more about it?
Thank you for the compliment! This was my first attempt at creating a book cover and I love it. The idea for the concept came to me after I wrote the following line in the story, which is a conversation Melody is having with her elderly neighbor:
“The livin’ eventually come to terms with dyin.’”
“I sure hope so,” I sniffled.
“You will, child. Trust me. God comforts those who ask, even when the tidal waves of life are tryin’ to drown them.”

Can you tell us about your writing process?
I still work a fulltime job, so I write usually at lunch or after I arrive home for the night. When a story hits me, I type like a crazy person to release it! I happen to type around 90 wpm, so that almost matches the speed of my thoughts.

How old were you when you started writing?
I have been writing ever since I was a teenager, but never really showed anyone my musings. It wasn’t until in college in my early 40s that my Creative Writing teacher urged me to explore what she felt was a talent.

Are any of your characters based on people you know?
I think all characters in books, movies, televisions shows, etc., carry a smidgeon of people we know.

Do you have a support network for your writing?
I am a part of several social media groups full of talented, seasoned authors who are kind enough to help me through the journey.

What items are on your desk/where you write?
Water (or wine, depending on whether I’m at home or work!)

Do you have a routine for your writing? ie time of day.
One day, when I make the plunge and take up writing as a fulltime career, I will. Now, it is really hit or miss.

If one of your books was made into a film/TV series, who would you like as the leading lady/man?

Actually, two of my books have been optioned for film!Number Seventy-Five is currently in production (www.number75themovie.com) and the lead actress, Sabrina Stewart, also narrated the audio version of the book. The other book I just optioned, The Lie, will also have Ms. Stewart in a role, but I won’t tell you which one until the casting is complete! J

Tell us something about yourself that readers won’t know from reading your books or web page?
I am absolutely petrified of spiders. It doesn’t matter how small they are, I run screaming in the other direction. I was bitten by a black widow during my teenage years, and an obnoxious neighborhood bully threw a tarantula in my hair when I was about seven years old. Those two events sealed my terror for the eight-legged freaks.

Non book questions

Favourite holiday place?
At home with all of my family.

Favourite food?
 Italian, hands down.

What kind of music do you listen to?
Depends on my mood. I love classic rock, heavy metal, punk, jazz, hip-hop, blues, you name it. Pretty much anything except country.

Favourite film?
 Aliens, starring Sigourney Weaver.

Favourite Chocolate?
Reeces Peanut Butter Cups

Favourite drink?
Barefoot Moscato

Thank you for answering my questions.

Guest Post Book Boyfriends/Hot Men in books by Kim Nash

For my blogaversary I asked the question, Who is your Book Boyfriend/Hot Men in Books? I have some great posts, today Kim Nash talks about her hot men.

When you asked me to talk about my favourite men in books, I struggled somewhat as for some unknown reason whenever I read a book, I manage to make the main character if he’s handsome and lovely look like either

Alex O’Loughlin

 Idris Elba

 David Beckham

It also took me a very long time to write the post because I had to do a lot of research to find pictures that would be appropriate! *wink wink*.

However, when I read Sue Watson’s Love, Lies and Lemon Cake, earlier this summer, which has been one of my most favourite books of the year so far, while I know that Sue had her own views of what Dan should look like, he became my most favourite book man and immediately pictured him as the gorgeous Jessie Pavelka.

When I was told by Oliver Rhodes at Bookou tire that in Sue’s original story, she was going to kill Dan off and they advised against it, I gasped really loud and shouted “NO!”   I was devastated!  He told me that it wasn’t real and that I needed to calm down and breathe once again! It took a while for my breathing to return to normal.  Can’t believe Sue was going to do this to the hero that lots of ladies have fallen in love with this summer!

As a character he was an Aussie, blonde, hunky, adventurous, had a lust for life and he could cook with his speciality being Lemon Cake!  What more could a girl ask for in a man!

What these authors don’t realise is that give us single ladies a false sense of hope! I’ve been hanging round my local deli but I can assure you that the person who manages it looks as far from as you could possibly get!

You can buy Sue Watson’s Love, Lies and Lemon and read about Dan for yourself by clicking here. I’d love to hear if you think Jessie Pavelka fits the bill or if you think there’s someone more suitable.  I’m sure Sue Watson would too!

Kim Nash, Publicity Manager, Bookouture

Thank you so much Kim, when I read your post I said 'noooo' at the mention of Dan's death.

Empty Shell by Ashley Fontainne

What They Say:

A pair of pink, silk underwear…

The quiet world of Melody and Jack Dickinson is about to be turned upside down. Twenty years of marriage hangs in the balance when Melody finds out about Jack’s infidelity. The betrayal is made worse when Melody discovers his lover is Serena Rowland, a young woman who works at Melody’s law firm.

A receipt from an overpriced hotel…

Harsh words are exchanged before Melody storms off to work, determined to have Serena fired. But when Melody hears Serena was murdered over the weekend, everything changes. Serena’s body is found beaten and strangled with a pair of pink, silk panties, in the same hotel that Jack had admitted staying at over the weekend. Within seconds of hearing the news, Melody’s life spins out of control when Jack calls in a panic. The police are at their home to arrest him for Serena’s murder.

Pictures of a young woman’s scantily clad torso on a cell phone…

Was she married to a monster? One who beat and strangled the young woman to death, or was Jack set up? Did Melody’s own dark secret, hidden inside her heart for years, have something to do with the nightmare they suddenly find themselves in?

Melody and Jack are about to discover that one fateful mistake will destroy many.
What I Say:
I would like to thank author Ashley Fontainne for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
When Ashley contacted me and asked me to review her latest book I immediately said yes, I had read and reviewed The Lie by Ashley last and really enjoyed it, so how could I say no.
The first thing I want to mention is the cover, how intriguing is it?
When we first meet Melody, she is happily married to Jack, soon her world comes crashing down around her.  She discovers Jacks affair with her co-worker Serena but worse is to come when Serena is found dead.  Jack is then arrested for Serena's murder.
Ashley tells the story from Melodys POV and also in parts as though the reader is watching from the outside in when following other characters.
With every page I was gripped by the whole story, had Jack really killed Serena? Had past transgressions come back to haunt Melody and others in this gripping mystery?
I really liked Melody and felt so sorry for her being thrown into such a nightmare, not wanting to believe Jack had done such a horrible thing and trying get everyone else to believe her that he was innocent.  Mel struggled as the story continued knowing who to trust.
A throughly gripping story that had me hooked from the first page to the last page.
About The Author

Award-winning and International bestselling author Ashley Fontainne is an avid reader of mostly the classics. Ashley became a fan of the written word in her youth, starting with the Nancy Drew mystery series. Stories that immerse the reader deep into the human psyche and the monsters that lurk within us are her favorite reads.

Her muse for penning the EVISCERATING THE SNAKE series was The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. Ashley's love for this book is what sparked her desire to write her debut novel, Accountable to None, the first book in the trilogy. With a modern setting to the tale, Ashley delves into just what lengths a person is willing to go when they seek personal justice for heinous acts perpetrated upon them. The second novel in the series, Zero Balance focuses on the cost and reciprocal cycle that obtaining revenge has on the seeker. For once the cycle starts, where does it end? How far will the tendrils of revenge expand? Adjusting Journal Entries answered that question: far and wide.

Her short thriller entitled Number Seventy-Five, touches upon the sometimes dangerous world of online dating. Number Seventy-Five took home the BRONZE medal in fiction/suspense at the 2013 Readers' Favorite International Book Awards contest and is currently in production for a feature film.

Her latest release, the suspenseful thriller The Lie, took home the GOLD medal in the 2013 ILLUMINATION BOOK AWARDS for ebook/fiction.

Guest Post Book Boyfriends/Hot Men in books by AL Michaels

For my blogaversary I asked the question, Who is your Book Boyfriend/Hot Men in Books?  I have some great posts, today AL Michaels talks about writinng a Hot Man in a book.

Writing Your Perfect Man- Lessons from a Chick Lit Writer

I’ve written some dreamboats in my books, and the reason I started in the first place was because no man really seemed to be like the ones you read about in books. Which is fine, we live in reality, we don’t expect Prince Charming. But here’s a few things I’ve noticed about the dreamy male characters in books, and maybe they’ll give our real life counterparts some ideas.
  1. They’re capable of explaining how they feel.
It’s usually way after something silly has happened, but these guys have enough self knowledge to explain why they’ve done something. That’s always nice, instead of sitting there in confusion, like a real person.
  1. Some shit happened, but they’re over it.
There was a crazy ex, a business deal gone wrong, parental issues. We always meet our leading men at the right time, when they’re done with all that stuff and can move on. In real life, we meet people when we meet them, and we’re usually dealing with our own stuff too. Which is where the understanding that real people aren’t perfect comes in.
  1. Organisation
I think people often mistake what power means. I personally didn’t find Christian Gray a decent male character, he didn’t make me swoon. Neither did that bloody soppy vampire. People were attracted to their power over their women, and in Gray’s case, his money. It’s easy enough to say ‘Oh, he flew her about in a private jet’ or whatever, but the truth of power is the ability to arrange things. To book dinner, to make plans. Whether that’s a private jet, or a private booth at Burger King.
  1. Surprises
Even control freaks like myself want a little surprise every now and then! My male leads are able to make sweet gestures that aren’t so over the top you want to vomit, but make a difference. Who doesn’t love a surprise?
  1. Understanding their girl.
Your dreamboat male knows what’s going on in his love’s head. Not always, that would be boring and unbelievable. But he knows enough about her history, her quirks, her story to figure out why she’s suddenly freaking out, or why she’s not happy. Understanding goes a long way.
  1. They Give and Receive.
No, I’m not being dirty. A working relationship with a fictional dreamboat involves give and take. Your main man can’t come in and solve all her problems. Why, you ask? Because then she has no purpose. If she can’t offer something, if she’s not what he needs back, then there’s no point. Again, back to Fifty Shades of Shit, she’s poor, he’s rich, she’s innocent, he’s experienced. She likes nice things, and he likes beating the shit out of a willing sex partner.
Also, I refuse to let my leading man sweep in to solve my leading lady’s problems- I write strong, kickass women who can save themselves. They sometimes need some help figuring out how to be vulnerable, but they don’t need a man on a white horse.
  1. Faults
That leads me nicely to number seven- they have to have something wrong with them! You know how boring it is to be with someone perfect? Tends to give your self esteem a bit of a knock too. Whether he leaves biscuit crumbs in the bed, or has a tendency to flirt, he has to be human.
  1. He sees her.
This is a really simple trope that real life men could learn from. Notice something about your partner and identify that you are paying attention. It could be as simple as Julia Stile’s ‘hey, your eyes have a little green in them’ in Ten Things I Hate About You. It could be Harry’s list of things he knows and loves about Sally in When Harry Met Sally (‘The little crinkle in your forehead when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts!’ Aw) but noticing goes a long way. It shows your male is smitten and your leading lady is worth watching.

Thank you so much, I hope your tips help aspiring writers!

Guest Post Book Boyfriends/Hot Men in books by Zara Stoneley

For my blogaversary I asked the question, Who is your Book Boyfriend/Hot Men in Books? I have some wonderful guest, today Zara talks about her Hot Man in a book.

Hot men, phew… where to start?

Thanks so much for inviting me over, Jo, to talk about one of my favourite topics!

So, firstly I have to admit that I’ve spent a lot of time with hot men. At times they’ve kept me awake into the early hours, had me up all night, until I’ve fallen asleep exhausted but satisfied, with a secret smile on my face. Or at other times I’ve buried my head in the pillow with a frustrated groan and a desire that has more to do with throttling them than flirting.

Because hot men can mean trouble. A hot man (for me) has to have more than come to bed eyes, and a gorgeous body, he’s got to be a bit tricky too. I mean it’s no fun if life is boring and every man is a pushover, is it? A hot man has a sharp brain, a wicked sense of humour, he can make me laugh, he can surprise me.

So when I dream up (literally) the hot men in my books, they usually end up leading me and my ladiesa bit of a dance. Because working them out isn’t always easy.

The problem is I want you to love them as much as I do, to understand them, because they are truly hot men. But I don’t want you to take them for granted. These men aren’t just poster boys, they’re real – which is what makes them hot. A hot man is more than a one night stand, a hot man keeps you turning the pages until you know everything about them. A hot man lingers in the back of your mind. They have a good side and a bad, they can be heaven and hell. And I love each and every one of mine.

Take Rory (yes, please) in Stable Mates. He has the physique of a true sportsman (hot) – and he has his shirt off often enough for us all to appreciate the fact. But he’s a bit of a flirt. And he forgets to tell his girl that she’s as important to him as she is, because, well he just assumes she realizes.

So if you’re out with Rory, what makes you stay to find out more?

He’s supping beers and telling jokes to the crowd, and you’re just not getting any real ‘us’ time, and sometimes you just feel like the skivvy and maybe not that important to him. Until he throws a wink or a cheeky grin your way. Until he cuddles one of the dogs, and gazes at you over the top of its head with those puppy dog eyes.

And he can make you laugh, into bed (or into the hay loft). And when he’s staggering about, with one leg stuck in his jeans you know he’s the one for you. Because he doesn’t look ridiculous, he looks irresistible.

Until next day when he forgets you were supposed to be doing something together. But then he explains he got distracted by stray kittens that needed rescuing, and plans a midnight picnic under the stars – just the two of you, and a bottle of wine. And he knows just how to make you feel special, and knows the exact spot to kiss you so that it sends goose bumps down your whole body.

He’s hot because he’s strong enough to throw you over his shoulder, determined enough to always go for the win, prepared to sacrifice everything for you… and do it all with a cheeky grin and a wink. Yes, sometimes he needs a mega big push rather than a subtle hint, but he’s hot enough to forgive… Win Rory’s heart and I reckon he’s a keeper. The one who’d move heaven and earth to protect you, the manthat would always be there when you really needed him… and that is damned sexy and hot!

I can’t finish without mentioning one more hot man in my life at the moment. Mick. Well Mick makes my heart race in an altogether different way. (Although there is a reason why he’s introduced with his shirt off – if you’ve not yet met a farrier, go search one out!)

He’s the strong silent type, but with a wicked sense of humour. He’s not for the faint hearted, but he is justso sexy, so hot. Mick smoulders. Mick has ‘come to bed’ eyes rather than puppy dog ones, and he has that Irish brogue that makes a girls knees wobble. But he’s smart, deep, and an altogether different kind of challenge to Rory. But I do like a challenge… andintense can be sizzling hot…But that’s another story!

The Stable Mates men were featured on the HarperImpulse blog recently – so if you want to see just how I picture them, pop over and then let me know if you agree http://www.harperimpulseromance.com/meet-the-stable-mates-men/

Some men are drool worthy, but to be really hot? Well that’s special. That extra little something inside and out that makes you melt when they look your way, and forgive those little imperfections… I guess as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so is hot… except hot is in the mind as well!

Thank you for your post Zara!

Trial of The Dead by Cristy Rey

The Pastophori of Iset has set a trap for the Incarnate…only she doesn’t know it.

Trail of Dead (Incarnate #2)

Cristy Rey

What They Say:
The Pastophori of Iset has set a trap for the Incarnate…only she doesn’t know it.

Burned out from being on the road again, a directionless Sunday finds herself inexplicably drawn to Salt Lake City. There she finds herself in a curious state. For the first time in her life, Sunday feels normal. She can walk around free of anxiety that she will be set-off by her inhuman sensitivity. She can be intimate without overheating. Are the days of the Incarnate finally behind her?

Cyrus has not handled losing Sunday well. For eight months, the werewolf has been a shadow of himself. His pack is concerned and his closest friend, Marcus, believes that Cyrus is in danger of being lost to his humanity. When their Alpha confesses that the Pastophori of Iset has set a trap for Sunday, Cyrus goes into full-gear trying to get her out of it…but he has to find her first.

What I Say:

I would like to thank Cristy Rey and Everything Marie Tours for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

When we meet up again with Sunday, it's months since left Cyrus and she still misses him everyday. Sunday starts to have dreams of a little boy she needs to help and protect, for some reason she is drawn to Salt Lake City.

Cyrus himself is a mess, he is magazine but getting worse by the day (lots of hot males here), not to mention Marcus and Angel.  Marcus is determind to reunite Cyrus and Sunday.

Again there are plenty of witches, a crazed sect, a prophet and werewolves galore.

I do like Sunday but my heart as always is with the hot men of the book the werewolves.  I felt sorry for Alex, Dani, Lesley and Deborah for being dragged into all this.  Dani however was really brave and put herself out for her friend Alex.

I loved the fight scenes in this book, in sure I've said this before but if you like fantasy books with witches and werewolves that aren't too long I would suggest this.  I did enjoy the book but there are others I have enjoyed far more, having said that I like to know where a series goes so will look out for the 3rd one in this series.

Excerpt #1
With a sharp nod to Cyrus, Stephen took a step back and again made his way to his seat. Cyrus claimed the seat Marcus vacated, muscles taut and ready to spring into action. It took everything to abate the firestorm that brewed in him. The loss of Sunday, a threat to Marcus, and the rising wolf that threatened to take over if Cyrus didn’t get himself in check.
“I think Marcus appreciates the situation.”
“Do you, Marcus?” Stephen asked. The younger wolf now stood with his hands in his pockets and his head lowered, refusing to direct his gaze to his leader.
“I do, Stephen, but, respectfully, I think it doesn’t matter.”
“What makes you think you can find her and, even if you did, the Incarnate would go with you willingly?”
“She came with us willingly before.”
“But she didn’t come with you willingly the last time, and correct me if I’m remembering things wrong, but you statedthat time she put you on your ass and turned the lights out on you for an entire day to prove just how unwilling she was to be recaptured.” Stephen leaned up on his elbows and shifted forward in his chair. “You think you cannot only find her this time, but get her to agree to going with you? Because, Cyrus, I want to be clear on this. She’s going to have to come with you for this to work.”
Cyrus nodded, and Stephen asked Marcus the same question.
“I don’t think it’s going to be that easy,” Marcus admitted. “But I think it’s worth attempting. At the very least, it gives Cyrus another shot with her, and I’m not sure he’ll stay with us long unless he gets at least that.”
The situation was clear. He’d been volatile since she’d absconded and left him behind, and only by confronting her could the situation be resolved. Cyrus wouldn’t be the first werewolf to leave behind humanity and choose to live out his days in wolf form. Once he made that fateful decision, his humanity would be lost forever. He wouldn’t come back. No one did. He would live out his days in the wild and he would do so in misery, alone.
“Is that accurate?” Stephen asked. There was no mistaking to whom he directed the question.
“Yes,” Cyrus answered.
The word stewed in the room while the three men quietly considered what it meant. Cyrus’s admission was deeply felt, and Stephen sighed heavily and brought his hands to cover his face, shaking his head and mumbling unintelligibly into them.
“So what do you want me to do?”
“I want a meeting with the cult leaders,” Cyrus replied.
Dropping back against the chair, he tucked his chin, beard brushing over chest. All the possible consequences of this action played out in his mind. He might not have admitted it to Marcus, even after Marcus had made his intentions known, but he’d fantasized about the millions of ways he could find Sunday again. Finally, he was opening up about them with Stephen, possibly the only person who could enable their reality.
“The cult has ceased all contracts regarding the capture and retrieval of the Incarnate.”
“Why?” Marcus asked, now inching closer to the table where the two men sat.
“Like I said earlier, Cyrus is the best and everyone knows it. He was the most dedicated to the Incarnate’s case and he is the one with the most experience with her. Since the witch’s flock was all but exterminated when she destroyed the main house, information about her is in short supply.”
“What does the cult know about Sunday that we don’t?” Cyrus interjected.
“Good question,” Stephen admitted with a nod. “It is my understanding that the Pastophori has found another way of trapping her.”

Excerpt #2

Despite the dark sunglasses, Sunday squinted into the glare as she pulled off the highway, heading into the Salt Lake City limits.
Through the years, Sunday’s frequent stops along the map of the continental United States had been little more than happenstance. She’d drive aimlessly in any given direction and perchance spot a skyline along the way that she wanted to investigate further. If it suited her interests, she would stay on a little longer wherever it was she found herself. Generally, she’d remain for no more than a few months at a time. Until she stumbled into Columbia, where she thought, so stupidly, that she could retire from her endless journeying.
After a couple of days in a no-name Kansas town, getting to SLC became Sunday’s sole ambition. There had been no guiding light or neon sign goading her. For some reason or no reason at all, the notion popped into Sunday’s mind over a mediocre breakfast at a random roadside diner.
Reason or not, Sunday took some comfort in, for the first time in a long time, having a direction. As soon as the signs started reading this many miles to Salt Lake City, she started humming the mantra: There are so few miles left. I’ll get there soon. Her rest stops became less frequent, and excitement acted as her body’s own stimulant. No need for sleep; she would rest when she got there. Another roadside sign and the miles to Salt Lake were fewer than they’d been before, three digits knocked down to two.
There are so few miles left. I’ll get there soon.
Each time, the smile on her face grew larger. SLC was her future, and the closer she got, the further her past became until it was a hardly a flicker on her subconscious.

Taking Back Sunday (Incarnate #1)

What They Say:
After five years on the run, Sunday has finally settled into a seemingly normal life in Columbia, South Carolina. What her two best friends don’t know is that Sunday has a secret past. She is the Incarnate, a conduit of mystical energy transcendent of the mundane and the divine. For most of her life, she served under Bernadette, the most powerful witch in the Northwest. Her power is terrifying, and what she remembers of her past—and what she doesn’t—haunts her. In the year that she’s been attempting to be anything but the Incarnate, Sunday has fought her abilities tooth and nail, but it’s been worth it. When Sunday joins her friends’ coven for an innocent gathering, Sunday discovers a darkness hidden beneath the blanket of the coven’s magic and she is determined to find out who is behind it and what she has planned.

For the last four years, Cyrus has been the point man on the contract to recapture the Incarnate and deliver her to the Pastophori of Iset. A gifted tracker and a fearless werewolf, he harbors a wild, inexplicable passion for the Incarnate that has driven him to hunt her. He was one of the original captors that brought her to Bernadette when his obsession with her began. Having found her, Cyrus and his pack find themselves torn between two objectives: take her by force and deliver her to yet another group of fanatics, or help her uncover the traitor among her coven.
